"Hi, I'm going to feed the hungry kids. Do you have a quarter?" This was Emma's pitch, as she worked her way from house to house, around the neighborhood this afternoon. Early in the summer she began praying (usually multiple times a day) for "the people who don't have food, to have food." Somewhere along the way, I'm sure there was a story we read or some Bible lesson at church that touched on some people not having any food, and it struck a chord with her. Then last weekend, our church talked about Meals from the Heartland, and how they're going to spend a week here in September, preparing bags of food to be shipped to kids and families in other countries who don't have much food. We talked to Emma about it, and she was immediately interested. There are several ways to help. You, your business, organization, school, church, family, friends, or whatever, can go take part in putting together the bags of food (dried rice and veggies). Dakota went with a team from work last year to do that. Or you can collect money to help cover the costs of all the food being put together. Just one quarter will make a meal for a family of 6. We'd like for Emma to be able to see how all the food gets put together and help with that, but we also realize she's only 4, and probably too young for that this year. So we asked if she'd like to collect quarters to help pay for the food, and guess what she said. "YESSS!" This evening before dinner, she collected about 47 quarters ($11.75). Not bad for about a half-hour's work. But you know, those poor neighbors really didn't stand much of a chance. What Scrooge is going to say no to a cute little girl asking for a quarter so she can go feed the hungry kids who have no food? It'll be neat to let her see the stories they'll do on the news about making the meals in a week or two. Then she can see better what she collected the money for and how the hungry kids are going to get some food.

That's neat. Jeff is doing that with his work again this year, too. I asked him just yesterday if Natalie could come help, but he thought she would slow their team down since it is an assembly line type of thing. Oh well. Collecting quarters is a good idea though!
Dakota is going with a group from work again this week, too. He keeps trying to think of a way she can go at least watch the process, but there's not really any easy way to do that. I figure it'll be on the news and she can see it that way.
