At 7am the sitter showed up at our house to get the two younger ones up and fed. Dakota, Emma and I had to leave for the race site pretty early so we could set up Emma's things in the transition area before it closed at 7:45am. However, her age group didn't race until about I0:30am. So after we got her things set up, we had nothing to do but wait.
Here's Emma, arriving early and surveying the lake she would be swimming in.

When they finally called for her age group (6-8 year olds), a line of yellow heads stretched across the beach.
The kids had timing chips attached to their ankles, so they could start one at a time (5 seconds apart).
Once the race started, it went REALLY fast! The distances for each of the three parts of the race were pretty short for their age group. The swim was a 50 meter swim, which was out around the buoy and back. They had lots of safety volunteers in the water to keep a close eye on the kids.
When they finished the swim, they had to run up the hill to the transition area.
This was the transition area where Emma got her shoes, helmet, and bike, and headed out onto the bike course.
The bike ride was 2 miles long.
When she finished the bike ride, it was back to the transition area to drop off the bike and helmet, and start the run to the finish line. The run was pretty short too--about 500 meters.

The clock above her says 18 minutes, but she actually finished in about 15 and a half minutes. (Remember they all started at different times because of the timing chips.)
Emma placed 8th among the seven year old girls. She is already making plans to do it again next year! That probably means I should do a little training too--it was hard work keeping up with her in that race! Since the distances were so short, Dakota and I were literally running from one place to the next--cheering for her, snapping a couple pictures, and dashing off to the next spot. It was quite the race for all of us! :)
