Snowpocalypse--or Whatever You're Calling It.

There's pretty much only one thing anyone is talking about today--the snow! I know a lot of Iowans are complaining because we got about 8 inches in yesterday's blizzard. Yes, 8 inches is a pain in the rear (especially if you are the one having to shovel it or drive anywhere in it), but it could be so much worse!!

Last year, for example, we were ravaged by ice, in addition to snow storm after snow storm--about every 2-3 days--each one dumping multiple inches on top of the mountains of snow we already had. Now that was worth complaining about! (The picture is of our upstairs deck at about this time last year.)

And this morning, my sister in Chicago said my hometown suburb was setting records for the highest total in the burbs--22 inches!! Later she posted pictures of drifts 5-6 feet high on facebook to prove it. Now that is worth complaining about!! (By the way, that's her back door completely snowed in by the corner of the house.)

So while I could complain today about the snow, or the bitterly cold temperatures (supposed to be around -40 tonight with wind chills) I'm just going to sip on some hot chocolate, look at pictures of last year, and the pictures friends and family are posting on facebook, and be glad that all we got was a regular old Iowa winter storm with 8 inches of snow. Besides, good news--today is groundhog's day, and the word is the critter didn't see it's shadow--meaning a quick end to winter and an early spring are on the way! Now, call me a skeptic, but part of me has to wonder if that critter's lack of shadow this morning wasn't a bit of a self-defense move on his part. No?
