The last time we picked apples there, Josiah was about 6 months old. We toted him around in a bumpy wagon, and he happily gummed and drooled on any apple we put in front of him.
This year he was old enough to help pick his own apples, and old enough to try to sink his teeth into whatever he could reach.
Ashlyn partnered up with him to hold the bag for the apples he picked.
The kids liked trying the different varieties of apples on the trees. Emma conducted her own taste test, and decided she has a new favorite apple--honey crisp.
Notice there are a lot of apples on the ground. We'd had a pretty big storm roll through the night before. Fortunately, there were still plenty of apples left on the trees.
When our apple bags were so full that no one wanted to carry them, we knew it was time to move on. And move on we did--to berries! They had several rows of black berry bushes to pick from, and a few rows of smaller raspberries. (The raspberry crop wasn't as good this year.)
Ashlyn didn't like picking the thorny black berries too much, but the raspberries were right up her alley.
And Josiah helped pick plenty of berries, but I don't think any of them made it into the buckets.
When we'd had our fill of apples and berries, we headed for the check out--which just so happened to be where the swing set was, too. A few minutes of swinging and playing, and it was time to get back in the van and head home. We stopped at a park for a picnic lunch, and enjoyed a little more of the beautiful day, before finally arriving at home.
Today, Dakota and I made a team effort of apple peeling and cutting. And with apples cooking on the stove top and in the crock pot, our house has a wonderfully warm cinnamon-apple smell! Perfect for the first official day of fall!
