Oh! The Drama!

So after surviving our week of swim lessons, we threw ourselves into something new--drama camp!  The girls each took classes at the Des Moines Playhouse for three days (Thursday was the 4th of July).  The short camp gave the girls a taste of what it's like to get involved in a play.

Ashlyn's classes were just in the mornings.  She got to tour the playhouse, exploring the different stages and backstage rooms.  Her class read stories and acted out parts of the books, while making crafts to go along with the stories.  She really enjoyed it, as I suspected she would.

Emma's classes were all day.  The first day the kids auditioned for parts in the play they were to put on.  After being assigned their parts, they practiced their lines, and worked on making the scenery.  Emma wasn't very happy that her role (Sleeping Beauty) was a small role with only a couple lines.  But she eventually got over it (by the last day) and had fun making new friends and doing the other activities.

At the end of the last day, Emma's class put on a performance for the families--The Princess and the Pizza.  This was part of the scenery that Emma helped design.  It's the inside of the castle, complete with a fireplace, a window, a crystal chandelier, and a trash can.  In front of it is the fabled bed, containing the pea, upon which the princess tried to sleep.

Below is Emma in her dramatic Sleeping Beauty pose.

And taking their final bows...

So what did Josiah and I do with all that time to ourselves while the girls were at their classes?  Well, the first day, we hung out with a friend who lives very near to the playhouse.  The next two days, the boy and I hung out at Ashby Park and splashed around in their wading pool.  Josiah thought it was a great way to spend a couple days, and he was right!
