Day 5

We were up early again the next morning to spend the day at Animal Kingdom. We started our day there with a safari ride. It was very bumpy, but very cool.

The safari cars load up and headed out for the African savanna.

As we went, we saw all sorts of African animals, appearing to roam free across the land. A couple of giraffes even crossed the road right in front of our car. It was much better than a simple stroll around the zoo.

After our trip through Africa, we went back in time to visit the dinosaurs. Dino land had a few rides, a sand pit for digging for dinosaur bones, and most importantly, a playground.

The weather that day was the best by far. The wind was calm, and the temperatures were wonderful, in the upper 60’s or low 70’s. I can’t wait until spring returns to IA, and we start getting temperatures that warm here!

Later in the afternoon, we took in a few shows—Finding Nemo and The Lion King. They were definitely a highlight for me. Finding Nemo was an abbreviated version of the story, complete with singing, dancing, and super colorful, larger-than-life fish.

The Lion King was a very impressive show as well, including several large floats with recognizable characters on them, lots of singing and dancing, and some high-energy acrobatics. The music had such a strong beat that Emma couldn’t help but dance in her seat, mimicking the dancers on stage.

The Lion King show let out just in time to catch the daily parade through Africa.

Since Animal Kingdom closes earlier than all the other parks, we were back at our hotel with a bit of spare time before dinner. The girls begged to go try out the swimming pool. Even though it was a nice day, by late afternoon, it felt too chilly to swim. But the girls insisted they wanted to try, so down to the pool we went!

We had been told that it was a heated pool. And since we had seen other kids and adults swimming in it throughout the week, even though temps had only been in the 50’s, we figured it must be well heated. But we were wrong. Those were just crazy people, or maybe they were from Alaska or something. The water was freezing. Emma stood on the steps, waist deep, not moving, for about 10 minutes. Ashlyn, however, jumped up and down the steps, and tried to dive into the water a few times. (With daddy’s help, of course.) She didn’t seem as bothered by the temperature of the water, but then, she’s still got a few good layers of baby chub for insulation.

That was about it for the swimming on our trip. We retired to our room for the night, where we made dinner and planned out our last day of fun.
