The beginning of the week started innocently enough. The skies were blue, the temperatures moderate, and the pool was inviting! We had several families sign up for a week of swim lessons, and the first two or three days went off without a hitch. But Thursday, after the first hour of lessons, the skies opened up and launched an attack! So much for finishing lessons. We got so much rain from the storm, the pool was too full and had to be drained several inches. More rain overnight brought the water level right back up!
Friday morning looked sketchy, but the rain held off until the last lesson. There was no lightening, so the kids just stayed in the pool while it poured. Monday we planned make up lessons, and I felt certain they would also be rained out. But we lucked out and the rain, tornado sirens, and trip to the basement held off until after everyone had finished their lessons.
We've sure had more than our fair share of rain and storms here lately! Often it's come in the form of torrential downpours and severe thunderstorms. Too many for my liking! Here's a picture of a really large tree across the street from us that strong winds blew over.
Josiah has been obsessed with the fallen tree, and asks us almost daily about if other trees might fall down.
But enough dwelling on the bad storms. Back to swim lessons! Ashlyn has been SO fearful of everything lately--even people and activities she likes have caused her a great deal of anxiety lately. I was prepared for swim lessons to be another one of those activities plagued with clinging, crying, and lots of fear! But I was so surprised when very little of that actually happened!
I was so proud of Ashlyn as she bravely swam underwater, and jumped and dove in from the deeper water in the pool. Those were things that absolutely terrified her last year!
Emma also improved her strokes and worked on some endurance to help her with her upcoming triathlon.
Josiah wanted so badly to take swim lessons too. But he had to settle for a little bit of pool time before and after the other kids' lessons most days. Fortunately his new Legos helped to distract him enough that missing out on lessons wasn't too upsetting.
Here's to hoping we're done with the big summer storms, and we can enjoy the rest of the summer as it's meant to be!
