Look! Balloons!

During the first week of August we have made it a tradition to go to the Indianola Hot Air Balloon Festival.  This year was almost an exception.  The temperatures had been so uncomfortably hot, that spending an evening out side in 100 degree heat, just didn't sound like much fun.  But despite our better judgement, we went anyway.  And we had fun.

There must have been a lot of people with the same idea about staying home on account of the heat, because the crowd was pretty small.  But that was fine with us.  As soon as we staked out a spot on the grass, the kids started asking about going on some rides.  (Think: a small assortment of carnival rides and bounce houses.)

Emma showed interest for the first time in the big climbing wall.  I used to love climbing walls, so I suppose I shouldn't have been surprised by her interest.  There were several kids in line ahead of her, and most of them didn't make it very far up the wall.  Watching them, I thought it must be a tough wall, and I was already feeling disappointed that Emma's first experience would be so difficult and discouraging.  But she proved me wrong, making it almost all the way to the top before she said her arms got tired and she rappelled down.

After that, the girls did the giant slide and bounce house together.

After a while, we began to notice the lack of hot air balloons overhead.  We've been to this event several times, and never been disappointed by the number of balloons in the air. But this year, it appeared that it was just too hot--even for the balloons. We found out later that many of the balloons opted not to fly because the extreme heat makes it harder to get off the ground.  So we enjoyed the handful that did fly over, and the kids spent the rest of the time running and tumbling in the open field.

...and eating popcorn. I forgot about the popcorn. Even Josiah couldn't get enough.
And speaking of Josiah, he didn't go on any rides or bounce houses, but he had a blast running around, climbing all over the stroller, and being a goof.

As the sun set, we wrapped things up and headed for home. We didn't see too many balloons, but we still had a good time.
