Last weekend we made the 6 hour trek out to Chicago to visit with my family. My dad and his wife came up from San Antonio, which was what initiated the family gathering. My dad had never met Ashlyn, or my nephew, Nathan. And the last time he'd seen Emma, she wasn't quite 3 yet. So it was a visit long overdue.
My aunt and cousin joined us on Saturday, and then the masses descended upon my sister's house on Sunday. Nathan was baptized and a big party followed.
The girls had fun with all the extra people around to play with. Ashlyn skipped her naps two days in a row, and surprised us by how well she did those days. They had a great time, playing games, building towers, reading, painting, and doing lots of other things.

(Even Nathan got into a little finger painting with a little apple-blueberry sauce on his high chair tray.)

We hung around for an extra day and gave my sister a free day of labor on Monday. With many projects around her house that needed help, and little time to get them done, Dakota volunteered to tackle her list.
Then Tuesday arrived and we made the long drive back home. This trip was unusual because it felt like a long trip. Typically our visits out there feel like they're over before they start. There is usually so much planned, we hardly have time to sit and talk with each other. In contrast, there was so little planned for this trip, and most of what we did was sit around and talk, so the time went much slower. Good lesson for the future--maybe we need to consider planning less and visiting more.
