Round One

Christmas is a fun holiday. In the morning, we started with opening stockings, and then had a big breakfast. As has become our tradition, we made cinnamon rolls, with colored icing, and sang Happy Birthday to Jesus. We have advertised Christmas as Jesus' birthday in our house. And on Christmas day we have a big birthday party for Jesus, complete with lots of food, treats, presents and games.

Ashlyn loved her big gift from Emma. It was actually something we gave Emma for her first Christmas, but she said she wanted to give it to Ashlyn this year. It's a Sesame Street toy she can stand up at. It makes music and noise, and lights up when she presses or hits things.

Emma's favorite gifts were her Leapfrog computer keyboard that hooks up to the TV and her game Candy Land.

Dakota was happy to receive a GPS that he's talked about for a while now. But better yet, was the Super Hero cape from Emma and me. Emma said a while back that she wanted to give her dad a super hero cape for Christmas. So I did my best to make one. Now he can instantly transform into Super Dad!

After all the Christmas carnage had come to an end, we played with our new toys, ate a small lunch, and the girls crashed for afternoon naps. Dakota and I went into clean up mode, and as of yet ,we're still working on that.

On Christmas evening, it's become a tradition of ours to go to the nursing home and spend time with the residents there. Tonight Dakota played piano, while Emma, Ashlyn and I handed out CDs of Dakota's piano music to the residents. After we passed out the CDs, Emma was handed the microphone and she sang a couple of songs with Dakota playing music for her. She did really well for her first solo! It was fun and everyone enjoyed it.

Back to the idea of Christmas being Jesus' birthday. At one point I wondered how we could convince our children that we were throwing a birthday party for someone else, if all the gifts we exchanged were for us--no presents under the tree for the birthday boy. But then I was reminded of the passage in the book of Matthew where Jesus said, "Whatever you do for the least of these brothers of mine, you do for me." I really feel like that applies to the time we spend at the nursing home on Christmas day. The residents that are there on Christmas day are the ones who don't have any family to share the day with--no one to take them to a warm house, filled with family, food and gifts, and no one to come spend time or eat dinner with them in the nursing home that evening. So what a blessing it is for us to go and spend time with them on Christmas day. For at least a short time, they have our attention, some nice music to listen to, and a couple of pretty little girls to fuss over. I think Jesus would like that birthday present. :)

Now to get ready for Round Two--Dakota's family arrives tomorrow!
