A week ago Monday, we drove down to Kansas City and stayed overnight with a friend. Bright and early Tuesday morning, we dragged the kids out of their warm sleeping bags to catch a flight to Texas. (Two flights, actually. Apparently no airport within a +400 mile radius of us has direct flights to San Antonio.)
We arrived shortly after lunch time, and dropped our luggage off at the hotel. (Our room wasn't ready yet.) My dad was working at the Alamo that day, so we walked over and surprised him there.
Then we grabbed a late lunch and went back to the hotel to see about getting into our room. After my dad got off work, he and his wife, Lisa, took us to a Mexican restaurant on the Riverwalk for dinner.
While we were waiting for our food, a mariachi band came and played for us. The girls thought that was so cool.
But the musicians weren't what impressed Ashlyn the most. This is how she ate most of her dinner--sitting sideways, staring at all the people and boats coming and going along the Riverwalk. She was mesmerized.
After dinner, we walked back to our hotel and enjoyed the view of this church all lit up.
My dad took the next several days off of work, and he and Lisa joined us as we explored the city. On Wednesday we went to the Children's Museum. We didn't realize when we booked our trip, that the week we planned to be there was San Antonio's spring break week. But it was very obvious that all the kids were out of school, and all of the touristy things we planned to do were PACKED!
Still, the kids had fun running around the museum and getting their hands on everything. There was so much to see and do there! The girls were baggage checkers at the airport, and then piloted the plane (with Grandpa's help). Ashlyn and Josiah had a tea party, and then Josiah crashed on the couch.
Ashlyn made friends with a stick horse, while Emma made a giant bubble around herself. Josiah and Ashlyn built towers with blocks, and then went grocery shopping. Who knew shopping and scanning groceries could be so much fun?! How come it's not that much fun when I have to go do it at home?
The girls also got art lessons from Grandpa. He showed them how to draw characters from his cartoons, "The Morps," that he created back when I was a kid.
And before lunch, they had an African drumming class with two Grammy award winning musicians! It was really, really loud!
We ate lunch at the museum and played for a little while longer before heading back to the hotel. Josiah needed a nap, and the grown ups needed a break from all the kids and noise. (When we left, the line to get into the Children's Museum stretched down the block! If that gives you any indication as to how crowded it was in there.)
After resting for a bit, my dad and the girls and I went out walking--soaking up the sunshine and loving the chance to walk around without having to be bundled up like an Eskimo! We also made an important discovery while we were out--there was a Goodwill store about half a mile from our hotel. That would prove valuable knowledge the next day when I realized that somehow, despite my obsessive-compulsive, detail-oriented packing job, I somehow managed to forget to pack any shorts or capris for Emma. She only had two pair of pants for the week. So we did a little shopping there the next day.
That night we had dinner at our hotel. (The hotel provided a free dinner on certain nights of the week.) Strangely enough, both of the girls asked for and ate huge plates of salad. They said that was the best part of the dinner that night.
After dinner, it was time for baths and bed. There was more walking and exploring in store for the next day!
