The Birthday Boy!

The day after Ashlyn's birthday, we took the kids in for their yearly check ups.  Based on Josiah's growth pattern and current height, the doctor predicted he could grow to a height of 6’8”!  That’s so hard to imagine!  I’m having a hard enough time coming to terms with the fact that he just turned another year older!
On the Sunday before his birthday, Grandma and Grandpa Derr came up for a short visit.
And later that day, we had a few family friends over for dinner and cake to help celebrate his birthday.  He doesn’t have too many kid friends yet, and he really wanted to invite a few of the ladies from church over, so a family and friends party seemed the way to go.
He wanted a Lego cake, so I made this chocolate-coconut cake with Lego shaped candies on top.
On his actual birthday, he got to open his presents after breakfast.  His big gift was his first bike.  He was so excited and couldn’t wait to try it out.  (Hence the pj’s in the picture)
Ashlyn, who just learned to ride her own bike without training wheels, was eager to give him his first lesson in how to ride.  It took a while for him to get the hang of peddling and steering at the same time, but he spent lots of time practicing during the day!
In the morning we also went over to Whole Foods for a story/craft/snack time.  The kids got to plant sunflowers to take home, and the group sang happy birthday to Josiah.  Later, he got to spend the evening “working” in the garden with Dakota.  His version of “working” includes a couple buckets, a shovel, and mixing up lots of mud!  It was his favorite way to end a day!
